I spent decades teaching people how to survive grief. Then it came for me and I discovered the truth I had never taught: grief doesn't ask to be understood. It asks to be lived.

Christine Thomas spent more than twenty-five years as a mental health professional specializing in traumatic grief, crisis intervention, and suicidology. She worked alongside those navigating some of the most devastating losses a human being can face : suicide, homicide, sudden death, community disaster and multiple traumas.
She thought she understood grief.
Then it came for her ending the life she had carefully built. She left the clinical world, packed what mattered, and drove toward the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. What she found there surprised her. The mountains did not soften her grief. They asked her to be fully present with ongoing traumatic loss.
The mountains also gave her the grace to fall apart completely, and the quiet certainty that falling apart was exactly the right thing to do.
Out of that season of loss, a writing life emerged. Christine began putting into words what no clinical framework had ever fully captured, that grief carries wisdom inside it, that healing asks for presence rather than strategy, and that the natural world holds its own profound teaching about endings and beginnings.
Her book, Becoming One With Grief, gathers everything she learned on both sides of the clinical desk. It speaks to anyone who has ever felt that the standard advice about grief missed something essential. It speaks to the person still sitting in the dark, wondering if the light will return.
Christine writes from her home in the Sierra Nevada mountains, where the seasons change with breathtaking honesty. She consults, writes, and remains convinced that grief, fully lived, opens us into something larger than the lives we had before.
